Ehab Abouheif is Professor and Co-Director of the McGill Center on Islam and Science at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He works at the intersection of ecology, evolutionary and developmental biology. His research made several major breakthroughs revealing how genes and environment interact during development and evolution. Using ant societies as a model, Abouheif uncovered the evolutionary importance of dormant genetic potentials, which can be triggered by environmental stress and exist in all organisms. He shows how genetic potentials can be harnessed to advance animal/plant breeding, conservation, and medicine. His research has attracted lots of media attention and has garnered him several prestigious awards including Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (USA) and the E.W.R Steacie Memorial Fellowship.
